The “Restore the Landing” project has registered with the Council’s Wai-care programme which aims to arrest the decline in water quality in local streams. There are groups both upstream and down stream of us undertaking local sampling and testing. Our concern arises from knowing both Lucas Creek and the Oteha Stream are polluted and amongst the bottom 25% of streams tested by Auckland Council in its monthly monitoring programme. Water quality is poor and pollution is reducing stream life. What we don’t know is where that pollution comes from.
Three members - Tony Trent, Hira Hunapo and Brian Hedley recently received training in sampling and testing water samples. As a council team samples and tests monthly we know the general status of the streams, so it is intended that local effort will sample and test tributaries each season to try and identify sources of pollution. The catchments contain mostly residential areas and light industry.
We ask that if anyone sees a pollution event to photograph it, record the day and time and location, report it to any of the three people named above, and notify the Council Hotline 09-377 3107
